Blurb or SynopsIS:Carey Langford's best friend is Devin Colyer. they've been friends since they were kids. one of the few things they argue about, though, is the boyfriend she just broke up with, his cousin Jerrod.Jerrod and Devin's antagonistic relationship goes way back, to a time when Devin's parents were still alive and he felt that they favored his cousin. Devin felt he could never please his parents, and even after their death he is still out to prove that he can succeed, despite their disappointment in him.

Carey made the mistake of dating Jerrod for a few months, and now she's pregnant with his child. Jerrod wants nothing to do with her or the baby, and Devin isn't sure whether he should be happy about this, or angry.

In the mean time, Devin and Jerrod's grandfather's health is slowly deteriorating, and now Devin feels the need to please his grandfather and show him that he can be a success in business.

While Devin is busy trying to get his computer business on track,Carey is trying to figure out how she is going to support herself and a baby with a limited income. She's currently living in her brother's house, but he has returned from his stint in Alaska and has decided he wants to stay. With Trent angry about her pregnancy, she knows she can't
stay and needs to find her own apartment, no matter what. Her goal now is to start her own photography studio (she currently works freelance) to bring in extra income in preparation of the baby.

As Carey struggles to come up with a plan for her and the baby, Devin watches her. He's been in love with her for years, but she doesn't know it, and now that she is having Jerrod's baby,he isn't sure how he is going to be able to deal with it. he can't get over the fact that this his happening, and it may tear apart their friendship. It's a very complicated set of emotions that the two are dealing with, because Carey doesn't realize she has loved Devin all along. What will it take her to see Devin as more than just a friend?

I enjoyed UNEXPECTED COMPLICATION for the interesting characters that populated this book. What i found unusual was that Devin was really the focus of the story, as opposed to the female lead, Carey. The
novel starts off with his story, and most of the struggling in the blossoming romance seems (to me) to come from him.It made for a different type of romance. The subplot of Carey's mother's hit and
miss relationships was also interesting, especially when the mother and daughter were compared (was Carey more like her mother than she cared to admit?). And i loved Devin's grandfather. he's the grandfather I wish I had. Characters make this novel a winner.

Blurb or Synopsis:This superromance I felt stood out, mainly because of it's plot. it is a romance,a story of a man (Tim Wainwright) who moves into his grandparents old home in williamston,Tennessee (population 123) with his three dysfunctional children, and gets involved with a veterinarian(she is caretaker to a potbelly pig who goes "home"to Tim's house on occasion, where he used to live with his owners the ).

Nancy Mayfield, the veterinarian technician,is divorced and remembers being a very bad step-mother. While she's attracted to Tim, she is not really convinced she'd want to be a mother to his three somewhat scary children, one of whom loves to dress up in black (the goth look). the subplot that i found different for a romance of this type had to do with the oldest son,Jason, who halfway in the middle of the story is convinced to join a lacrosse team. Not to give anything away, it is his involvement with this team and the coach that I found to be a very
intriguing subplot, albeit almost creepy, and I couldn't wait to find out how it all panned out.

Tim and Nancy's slow dance around each other is just that-slow. but it's realistic. and with his baggage (the three dysfunctional kids and the memory of his murdered wife),their relationship is almost doomed from the start. She feels he's the reason the kids are the way they are, but Tim is mainly frustrated and is trying to protect them, hence their move to the small town where he grew up. It was in Chicago that his wife Solange was murdered, and now he's trying to make it up to the kids by taking them to a safe environment, not realizing that there really is no such thing as "safe", anywhere, as he will find out soon enough.

I was debating on whether to give this book a 5 on amazon. it's a very strong 4, a book that really kept me on edge for a good part of the story. It was not only the story lien that kept me hooked, but it was
the authors style of writing her characters. she has a unique way of creating animal characters that are so endearing that they can definitely be considered important characters in their own right. The pig, Lancelot, is a riot, and I now want to rush out and get my own piggie. he's the funniest thing, thinks he's a cat, and is pretty much an important minor character. anyway, I am definitely recommending
OVER HIS HEAD.

#44 THE ROGUE'S RETURN by Jo Beverley

Date Began and Finished 4/12-4/16, 2006

Number of Pages 370 (includes afterward)

Reason for readiNG: Review for Curled Up
Amazon Rating 4/5 stars

Blurb or SynopsIS: It is September 1816. One of the last books in the series "The Company of Rogues",THE ROGUE'S RETURN centers on Simon St.Bride,a man that finds himself in a duel against Lancelot MacArthur for various reasons, but in particular for insinuating an improper relationship between Jane Otterburn and her Uncle Isaiah Trewitt. As the duel is taking place, Jane appears at the event, watches as MacArthur shoots Simon a tad too early, and thus Simon shoots down MacArthur dead. When asked why she had come to them, Jane informs them that her uncle had shot himself and was on death's bed. The two rush over to Isaiah, who asks as his last request that Jane and Simon marry. Simon has no feelings for Jane, except for curiosity, but marries the young girl, barely 18, to please his good friend.

Jane, on the other hand, had been in love with Simon since she had moved in with her uncle upon arriving in Canada over a year ago. She had been traveling with her cousin Nan, the two of them having been raised by the same mother, Aunt Martha. Now that Martha was dead, the two girls were traveling to the new world to their uncle. What is revealed to the reader, however, is that Jane is not who she says she is. In fact, no one knows that Jane was in fact Nan all along, who took over the identity of Jane when Jane passed away on the ship they were sailing from England to Canada.

Now that Nan is married to Simon, she feels tremendous guilt over her deception.Uncle Isaiah never knew, and now the secret is still with Nan, or Jane as she is known to the world. Simon has fallen in love with Nan, or "jancy" as she's asked him to call her. simon had been shot by MacArthur, his wound becomes infected and part of his injuries was a broken rib, which also becomes infected. Jane nurses him back to health, and it is with luck that they are able to board the ship on time to take them home to England.

The trip is grueling, but the two share intimacies and secrets. The trip itself makes a mini-story, as Simon slowly recovers finally from his gunshot wounds, but Nan falls sick and it's Simon's turn (as well as a
hired maid) to care for Nan. nan is still worried about her secret identity being revealed, but what she is very worried about is a possible death threat on Simon. Before they had left for England, as Simon was recovering in his bed,an intruder tried to murder Simon, although they have no proof that the fire that was started below his room was indeed intended to kill him. But circumstances have told them that someone is searching for important papers held by Simon.

this was my first book by Jo Beverley, and thus the first I've read in the Rogue Series. Very enjoyable, although maybe a tad too long. I saw this book as an almost epic type of story, with the duel to start the
story, the mystery of Nan's/Jane's background, the long voyage to England (a month long) and then finally their arrival in England, where Simon introduces Nan to his family the St Brides, who have more money than Nan could ever imagine. Her fear of being accepted into his family shows, as she came from nothing, a mother who was a beggar by trade. It's part adventure story, part Cinderella story, but fans of historical romances will sure to find something they like about THE ROGUE'S RETURN. The final book in this series will come out in 2007, and I hope to read it, as well as all the past books to catch up on all the other members of the Rogues.

#36 HOT CHOCOLATE ON A COLD DAY by Roz Denny Fox
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Just finished....
Number of Book #36
Name and Author HOT CHOCOLATE ON A COLD DAY by Roz Denny Fox
Date Began and Finished 3/240-3/27 2006
Genre - Contemporary romance
Year It Was Published - April 2006
Publisher - Harlequin (Signature Select)
Number of Pages 381
Mass Market Paperback
Reason for reading: Review for LoveRomances
Amazon Rating 4/5 stars

Blurb or Synopsis: HOT CHOCOLATE ON A COLD DAY is actually a continuation of two books that Roz Denny Fox penned a number of years ago: ANYTHING YOU CAN DO and HAVING IT ALL, which were reissued earlier this year. This third book,a sequel if you will, takes place about 11 years later, with the teenagers from the first two books now young
adults in their 20's.

Megan Benton, the daughter of Emily Benton, started off as a rebellious teenager in the first book, but with the help of her new stepfather "Camp",she changed her ways and is now a responsible adult living life as a member of the Coast Guard in northern Michigan (St Ignace), where winters are horrifically cold. Younger brother Mark has come to visit, and the two of them get involved with her new neighbors downstairs, the mysterious Dodge Sterling, his 4-year old son Tyler, and Dodge's deceased wife's two siblings,Joel and Lauren. Megan and Mark's cousin through their mother's marriage to Camp, Keith Locke,
also makes a surprise visit, to check on Megan and Mark.Mark,by the way,is trying to get as far away from his parents as possible, because of his decision to not accept a potential counselling job at Wellmont College, where both parents work, and instead wants to become a photographer.neither parent(stepfather or biological mother)are Happy about it.And grandmother Mona Benton may have interfered yet again with her grand children's lives, against Emily's wishes,by backing up Mark's decision to change careers.

The focus of HOT CHOCOLATE is mainly on Megan,(who has an obsession over hot chocolate!)and her "budding" relationship with Dodge, a very angry man whose life remains a mystery to all of them for quite a while. Megan does her best to make these newcomers downstairs feel right at home, but only succeeds to anger Dodge. it is Mark that makes some headway and befriends Lauren, who along with her 14-year old brother Joel, resent Dodge's role in their lives, despite the fact that they have no one else to turn to for guidance. Lauren and Joel's parents were murdered, and it was Dodge's interest in their older sister Blythe that brought them to the cold winter of Michigan. they wish they were back home in New York. with Mark's help, Megan learns what brought Dodge Sterling and his brood to this part of the country, and what he is running away from.

HOT CHOCOLATE ON A COLD DAY continues the story of the Bentons and the Campbells, focusing mainly on the younger three,Megan,Mark and Keith.Megan however is the standout character, the woman who tries to get to the heart of the family downstairs, and at the same time seems to always be the one that is trying to keep the peace among her own family. Her mother Emily is going through her own "problems",dealing with a mother in law (1st husband's mother)who always seems to be interfering, causing Emily so much stress that she has become ill. Megan also finds that Tyler, Dodge's young son, has grown attached to her,and this may cause problems for both Megan and Dodge down the road. Dodge has no intentions of sticking around. He has already purchased a home but it is not in moving-in condition, therefore he's renting the downstairs apartment. His past with his wife Blythe seems to be a secret, with not even his sister and brother in law knowing the truth about the relationship between Blythe and Dodge. There is a lot of unexplained "baggage" that needs to be explained before Dodge and his small family can move forward and past Blythe's death.

for those who read ANYTHING YOU CAN DO and HAVING IT ALL, HOT CHOCOLATE ON A COLD DAY is a must-read. for those who haven't read the first two books, HOT CHOCOLATE is a stand-alone book, and the extra bonuses at the back of the book are a treat.Recipes to Megan's favorites are included, plus interesting articles related to the story, are also included. HOT CHOCOLATE ON A COLD DAY is typical of most books
written by Roz Denny Fox, whose trademark is her characters: real down to earth people that the every day person will relate to.

#34 THE RUG MERCHANT by Meg Mullins
Number of Book #34
Name and Author THE RUG MERCHANT by Meg Mullins
Date Began and Finished 3/19-3/20 2006
Genre - Fiction
Year It Was Published - March 2006
Publisher - Viking
Number of Pages 258
Hardcover
Reason for readiNG: Review for Bookreporter.com
Amazon Rating 4/5 stars

Blurb or Synopsis:A wonderful debut by Meg Mullins, THE RUG MERCHANT centers on an Iranian immigrant, Ushman, who sells beautifully crafted rugs to wealthy Americans in New York, while his wife Farak lives in their hometown of Tabriz, where she picks out the rugs to be shipped to America, where he can get tens of thousands of dollars for each of them.

Ushman is in his thirties, and is childless Ushman and Farak tried many times to have a child of their own, but Farak suffered through too many miscarriages, the last one occurring during the big quake a few years ago,and after that Farak did not want to continue trying.Ushman goes to America to find a better life for them, but instead he finds loneliness and a wife that does not seem to want to be with her husband.

Farak informs Ushman that she is leaving him, and he cannot accept this. His life had revolved around his love of Farak, and he couldn't simply believe that his marriage was over. One night he goes to the airport and watches the people around him, and accidentally meets Stella,a freshman at Barnard College, and the two begin a somewhat unusual
friendship.

Ushman's knowledge of America is still very limited, and he is often overwhelmed and confused on what is proper behavior and what is accepted.Stella is as free as one her age can be, with ethics and moral standards that are far from what Ushman has grown up with. Yet, he knows he is now in America and he is allowed to look at women that are not covered up from head to toe, and that even a one night stand is not frowned upon. Ushman is attracted to the free spirited Stella, and she teaches him many things of what it is like to be an American.

In the meantime, Ushman continues his business of selling rugs, his most frequent customer being the wealthy Mrs Roberts, whose husband appears to be an invalid. Their relationship is one that of master and
servant, and Ushman tries his best to behave in the way that Mrs Roberts expects. However, things happen to make him wonder what Mrs Roberts is really feeling,as she seems to be reaching out to him for more than just a business relationship. While a friendship is far from what is evolving, their behavior around each other points to something that could be a somewhat one-sided relationship between two lonely people.

THE RUG MERCHANT is a complex tale that focuses more on behavior and feelings than on actual action and events.Meg Mullins does a wonderful job, writing this story with a delicate prose that brings out feelings of loneliness and being an outsider.Ushman's awkwardness and confusion in a foreign land are detailed in exquisite form, and the reader will truly feel embarrassment and maybe even a sense of
protectiveness over this man who wants desperately to live the American dream, yet feels out of his element. His love for his wife Farak is near-tragic,as he has no control over what is happening with her while she lives so far away. by moving to America,he essentially gave up his rights, so to speak, of being an Iranian husband, in which divorce would never have been permitted if he had never left.I highly recommend THE RUG MERCHANT and anxiously await Meg Mullins' next novel.

My favorite book this month was AFTERMATH. It'll definitely be on my top list for 2006.

Least favorite was THE CATTLEMAN. It was rather dated for a contemporary romance,I thought. Enjoyable, but I kept thinking DYNASTY on the Outback ...

Average 98.25 pages per day. Better than December. I have a feeling I'm not going to be reading as much this year as I did last year.

Average pages per booK: 305

My favorite book this month was AT FIRST SIGHT. I didn't like his previous book, but this one was another tear jerker.

Least favorite was DON'T LET THE GOOD LIFE PASS YOU BY. This author has promise, but she doesn't quite do it. I also don't care for YA books so that is probably the other problem.

Average 85.52 pages per day. Not bad considering I didn't have a lot of time to read this month

Least favorite was PRINCE OF DANGER, only because of all the books I read, this was probably the one that was not written as well as I would have liked. I'm finding I am not too keen on the Time Warner Forever
books... They just don't seem to have high quality writing.
